Welcome to Top Kayaking Gear. By accessing or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

About This Site

Top Kayaking Gear publishes reviews, comparisons and how-to guides for everyday recreational paddlers on lakes and calm rivers. We cover kayak paddles, life vests, dry bags, kayak seats and kayak carts, with plain notes on what each one does well and where it falls short.

Affiliate Disclosure

Top Kayaking Gear is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. When you click an Amazon link in our content and purchase a qualifying product, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Paddling Safety

Kayaking carries real risks, including drowning, cold water shock and hypothermia. Wear a properly fitted, approved life jacket every time you are on the water, and check that it suits your weight and the kind of paddling you do. Water can be dangerously cold even on a warm day.

Check the weather and water levels before you launch, and stay off the water in high wind, lightning or flood conditions. Learn the hazards of your own water, including dams, strainers, fast current and boat traffic. Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back, and do not paddle beyond your ability. Consider a class from a qualified instructor.

Secure your kayak properly for transport, follow the load limits of any cart or carrier, and lift with care. Waterproof bags can fail, so do not rely on one to protect anything you cannot afford to lose. Nothing on this site is professional safety, medical or instructional advice. If you have a back, shoulder or other health concern, talk to your doctor before paddling.
